5 Signs Your Lab is Ready for NABL Assessment
How do you know when your lab is genuinely ready to apply for NABL assessment — rather than applying prematurely and wasting time and money on a failed assessment?
How do you know when your lab is genuinely ready to apply for NABL assessment — rather than applying prematurely and wasting time and money on a failed assessment?
Premature NABL application is one of the most costly mistakes labs make. A failed or postponed assessment wastes the application fee, delays accreditation, and demoralises your team. Here are five signs your lab is genuinely ready.
Sign 1: Your IQC Has Been Running Consistently for at Least 3 Months
NABL assessors want to see IQC data demonstrating consistent analytical performance over time. Three months of IQC data at minimum (6 months preferred) with documented failures, investigations, and corrective actions.
Sign 2: All Staff Can Answer Basic Questions About the QMS
NABL assessors routinely interview staff — not just the lab director and quality manager, but technicians and phlebotomists too. Ask random staff members: What is the quality policy? What do you do if IQC fails? What is your role in the internal audit? If they can’t answer, you’re not ready.
Sign 3: You’ve Completed at Least One Full Internal Audit
A documented internal audit covering all ISO 15189 clauses, with findings, corrective actions, and closure evidence, is a strong signal of readiness. If you haven’t done your internal audit yet, you’re not ready to apply.
Sign 4: Your Documentation is Complete, Current, and Accessible
Pull any SOP randomly — is it the current version? Is it accessible to the staff who need it? Is it consistent with actual practice? If yes across the board, you’re ready. If you can find outdated or inaccessible documents, address this before applying.
Sign 5: You’ve Done a Mock Assessment — and Addressed the Findings
A structured mock assessment (ideally by an external consultant with NABL assessor experience) is the best predictor of actual assessment success. If you’ve done a mock assessment, addressed all major findings, and verified closure — you’re ready.
