NABL Application — Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

The NABL application process is more detailed than many labs expect. Errors in the application can delay your accreditation by months. Here are the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

Application errors are frustrating because they are entirely avoidable. A little care at the application stage prevents months of delay.

Mistake 1: Wrong Scope Definition

Defining your scope too broadly (listing tests you perform infrequently or for which you don’t have a validated method) or too narrowly (omitting tests that should be included) are both problems.

Fix: List only tests you routinely perform, have validated methods for, and maintain IQC on. Each test listed must be able to withstand assessor scrutiny.

Mistake 2: Lab Director Qualifications Don’t Match NABL Requirements

NABL has specific qualification requirements for lab directors depending on the disciplines in scope. Submitting an application where the listed lab director doesn’t meet the qualification criteria leads to immediate application rejection.

Fix: Review NABL’s personnel qualification requirements (NABL 112 document) for your specific disciplines before applying.

Mistake 3: Incomplete Quality Manual

Submitting a Quality Manual that doesn’t cover all ISO 15189:2022 sections, or references procedures that don’t yet exist, is a common error.

Fix: Ensure your Quality Manual comprehensively addresses all ISO 15189:2022 clauses before submission.

Mistake 4: Applying Too Early

Applying before your QMS has been running for at least 3–6 months results in assessors finding evidence gaps (no IQC history, no internal audit, no management review).

Fix: Apply only when you have at least 3 months of operational evidence for your QMS.
