Laboratory Quality Manual — How to Write One That Passes NABL

The Quality Manual is the cornerstone document of your laboratory’s Quality Management System (QMS). It is one of the first documents NABL reviewers examine — and one of the most common sources of non-conformances.

The Quality Manual is the cornerstone document of your laboratory’s Quality Management System (QMS). It is one of the first documents NABL reviewers examine — and one of the most common sources of non-conformances.

A well-written Quality Manual doesn’t just satisfy NABL assessors — it becomes a genuine reference document that guides your lab’s quality culture. Here’s how to write one that works.

What Should a NABL Quality Manual Include?

Under ISO 15189:2022, the Quality Manual must address:

  1. Scope and purpose: Define the laboratory, its activities, and the scope of accreditation
  2. Quality policy and objectives: Signed statement by top management
  3. Organizational structure: Organogram with roles and responsibilities
  4. Management system: How the QMS is documented, controlled, and maintained
  5. Risk and opportunity management: How risks are identified and addressed
  6. Document and record control: How documents are created, approved, and archived
  7. Personnel management: How staff are recruited, trained, and assessed
  8. Facilities and environment: Physical requirements for lab operations
  9. Equipment management: Calibration, maintenance, and malfunction procedures
  10. Pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes: Overview of key processes
  11. Continual improvement: Internal audit, CAPA, management review

Common Quality Manual Mistakes

  • Copying from another lab’s quality manual without adapting to your context
  • Generic statements that don’t reflect your specific lab processes
  • Not updating the manual when processes change
  • Inconsistencies between the manual and the SOPs it references
  • Missing version control (no revision history)
